In addition to her parents, Ruby was predeceased by her husband, Paul Johnson and her son, Larry Johnson; her brothers, Lemuel Hanson, G W Hanson, Frank Hanson, William “Bill” Hanson, and Robert Hanson (her twin); her sisters, Princess Davis, Marie Chafin, Annie Lou Grimsley, Corine Johnston, Ethel Amerson, and Sylvia Rae. She is survived by her sons, Bobby (Nancy) Johnson of Melbourne, Australia, and Richard (Linda) Johnson of Macon, Georgia; her grandchildren Dave (Leisa) Forman, Kate (Jonathan) Mackie , Todd Johnson, and Richard Riley; 9 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her faithful companion, her robot puppy.
Ruby worked for the City of Macon until her retirement. She had varied interests that came together to make her the wonderful lady she was. During the 1960-1970 timeframe, her family was involved in racing dirt tracks around Middle Georgia. Ruby was one of the drivers. She had no problem pushing her opponents into the fence and winning the race. From 1967 – 1973, she had a by-line with the Jones County News writing, “Action on the Spot,” featuring highlights and race results of the weekly stock car races. Another interest she had was quick draw. She loved it. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, she could be found practicing her quick draw preparing for competitions.
Her passion was writing, and she was an active author for many years. Ruby published two children’s books, “Our Neighborhood” and “Rerun’s World”. Both books were placed in the Macon-Bibb County School System as part of the Fourth-Grade curriculum. Other published works include “To Be” and “Time”. In 2007, she published “Banning Road” her first novel.
Her love for her family out shined everything else in her life. When her husband died so young, she became the head of her family. Her three boys knew where they stood with her. They and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her heart; Granny Ru was always smiling and happy. The love she had for her siblings was never ending. She enjoyed all the time she spent with them traveling and taking photos of old houses and barns; she always had paper and a pen to jot down notes. She also loved every one of her nieces and nephews. She had a positive attitude and always felt “like a million-dollar baby”.
