Mildred Melise "Millie" Chapman Witherington

Mildred Melise Chapman “Millie” Witherington, 94, of Gray passed away Sunday, January 3, 2021. The family will be planning a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.

Mildred was born December 8, 1926 in Adrian, Georgia, to the late Samuel Pryor Chapman and Malissa McClelland Miller Chapman. She is survived by her four children, Sandra Wright (Charlie) of Talking Rock, Georgia, Candace Duran (Russ) of Gallup, New Mexico, Stan Witherington, Jr. (Jan) of Winder, Georgia, Melise Fathi (Rick) of Gray; seven grandchildren, Delena Suber, Heather Lyerly, Colin Duran, Sara Torbert, Emma Witherington, Malissa Moughon, and Evan Raley; seven great grandchildren, Holly McDonald, Troy Barker, Lauren Lyerly, Mallie Moughon, Beau Moughon, Suzanna Torbert, and Brooks Torbert; two great great grandchildren, Tripp McDonald and Olivia McDonald; and several nieces and nephews. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, James Stanley Witherington, Sr.; two sisters, Marjorie Chapman and Sara Wicker, four brothers, Leo, Pryor, Curtis and Donald Chapman.

Mildred graduated from Adrian High School and attended Georgia Teacher’s College (now Georgia Southern University). She managed the books for her husband’s business, Witherington Awning & Jalousie Company. After that, Mildred worked for the Bibb County Clerk’s Office and then as office manager for Graphic Coordinators, Inc. before retiring. She was very artistic and enjoyed drawing, painting, gardening, playing the piano, and reading; she was a life-long learner with a thirst for acquiring knowledge and especially enjoyed being outside in nature. Mildred was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who loved spending time with her family.
