Mary Lowe Marbut passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 1, 2022. Mary had a wonderful and exciting life. She had a passion for travel and enjoyed sharing her love of travel, art, and music with others. She was light-hearted and generous, with a true love of people and great pride in her three children.
Mary was born on March 15, 1934, in Macon, Georgia to Edward Mumford and Jimmie Lee Lowe. She graduated from A. L. Miller High School and the University of Georgia, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She taught school before raising her family and enjoyed working at Camp Greystone as a counselor while her children were young. Mary was a member of the Junior League and the Town and Country Garden Club. She was active at Christ Church and served in the Altar Flower Guild for many years. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels.
After her children were grown, Mary worked for Carlson Marketing as a travel director for 20 years. This experience allowed her to see much of the world both here and abroad, including places that were just opening up to tourism. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was a highlight and point of personal achievement. After retiring from Carlson, Mary traveled often with family to acquaint her grandchildren with her favorite places. She loved her extended Lowe family, friends, flowers, and France, with frequent visits to Paris.
Mary and husband John Wesley Marbut, Jr. enjoyed their life together with their mutual interest in art and music. Frequent trips to Santa Fe, Europe, and their home in Highlands, NC made for many happy memories, as did their little dog Jake.
Mary found great joy in being a part of God’s world. She was blessed with a full and happy life, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Carol (Robert) Corbin, and her husband John. She is survived by her children Lowe (Virginia) Kinman, Lee (Carter) Bailey, and Jim Kinman; her sister Ruthie (Phillip) Sullivan; her grandchildren Mary Beth Kinman, Joe Bailey, Kinman Bailey, Mary Lowe Bailey, and Carrie Kinman; and James Walter “Pete” Kinman, father of her children.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at Riverside Cemetery (North Gate) at 3:30PM, with the Reverends Cynthia Knapp and Harriette Simmons officiating. There will be a reception at Idle Hour Country Club following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Christ Church, 582 Walnut Street, Macon, GA 31201 or Georgia Industrial Children’s Home, 4690 Mumford Road, Macon 31210 or the donor’s favorite charity.
