Mardell Stuckey Balkcom Obituary

Mardell Stuckey Balkcom, 81, of Macon, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2024.  Born in Macon, Georgia, on April 20, 1942, to the late Milton Charlie Stuckey and Mildred Mullis Stuckey, Mardell’s life was marked by dedication, warmth, and a loving spirit that touched all who knew her.

A 1960 graduate of A.L. Miller High School for Girls, she went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Gene Balkcom, on July 1, 1960. The bond they shared from their teenage years blossomed into a lifelong partnership filled with mutual love and respect.

Beginning her career at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Mardell showcased her professionalism and work ethic. With the birth of her children, she transitioned to the Medical Center Credit Union (MCCU), where she contributed passionately for over 21 years. After retirement, she continued to work part-time, offering her talents as an administrative assistant to the Atlantic Sun Athletic Conference.

A lifetime member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Macon, she actively served alongside her community peers, notably contributing to the Women's Missionary Union (WMU). Her faith was a cornerstone of her character, inspiring those around her through her commitment and service.

She found joy in travel, having explored the majestic landscapes of Alaska, New Zealand and Australia. A skilled pianist, she spread happiness playing melodies for friends and family, and her love of romance novels could only be outmatched by the love she held for her family. Above all, her grandsons were the light of her life, and every moment spent with them was cherished.

Mardell is survived by her husband of 63 years, Peyton Eugene ”Gene” Balkcom; daughter, Angie Benfield (Adam), of Juliette, Georgia; son, Greg Balkcom (Carmen), Fort Valley, Georgia; grandson, Joshua Benfield, of Juliette, Georgia and Alexander “Alex” Balkcom (Ashley), Dexter, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mardell was preceded in death by her sisters, Melba Hester and Mylene Davis.
