Lani Schewe Obituary

Mr. Lani Schewe, 84, of Gray, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024.  A memorial service will be held at Gray Methodist Church, in Gray, Georgia on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 2:00 PM, with the Reverend John Haney officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the church.

Lani was born on December 14, 1939, in Hartsburg, Missouri, to the Late Arthur Frank and Ollie Schewe.  He moved to Wellston, Georgia, now known as Warner Robins, in 1942. Lani grew up in Warner Robins where he attended elementary through high school.  He played football for Warner Robins High School and was a graduate of the class of 1958.

Lani graduated from Georgia Southern where he received his education degrees. In 1966 he moved to Jones County where he taught math and coached football and golf.  Later he became principal at Maggie Califf Middle School and served in that position until he retired. Upon retiring he worked part time at the “bus barn” with Jones County Board of Education. Once he left the Board of Education he worked in the sporting goods department at Walmart in Macon.

He and his wife, Mary Ann, shared a love of the mountains, board games, bingo and watching Jeopardy. They met playing bingo and dreamed of him winning Jeopardy. He loved his children and accepted his blended family as his own.

Laughter was a big part of his personality.  From practical jokes on friends and colleagues to telling jokes and making faces, he loved to laugh, and hearing others laugh. He loved being around people and his daily trip to the BP station gave him the opportunity to interact with others in the community.

He was an avid sports fan including all things Georgia Tech, high school, college and professional football and baseball, especially the Braves.  In his younger years, he could be found at Jonesco Golf Course golfing or fishing.  He would take his old golf clubs and cut them down for his children so he could teach them the game as well. He enjoyed hunting and fishing especially with his kids. He was forever the teacher especially with his Sunshine Sunday School Class at Gray Methodist where he would research the Bible in order to teach an in-depth lesson.

He will be greatly missed not only by his family but the Jones County Community.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Schewe; his children, Dee Smith (Bob) of Warner Robins, Clint Schewe (Debbie) of North Carolina, Brent Schewe (Summer) of Gray, and Lance Schewe (Shannon) of Warner Robins; his brother, Wilder Schewe of Florida; his grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; his bonus daughters, LaCrecia Waters (Jimmy) and Angel Wilfong (Lynn), both of Gray; and his bonus son, Shane Upshaw.
