Johnnie H. Powell, Sr., 88, of Macon, GA, passed away Friday, January 13, 2023. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 20, 2023, at Hart’s at the Cupola with the Reverend Jeff Powell officiating. The family will greet friends 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.
Johnnie was born in Wrightsville, Georgia to the late Clarence Edward and Helen Virginia Smith Powell. He retired from the United States Air Force as SMSgt, serving 23 years. He was in civil service for more than 20 years. Johnnie served as a deacon and minister of music at several Macon area churches, and other states while serving in USAF.
Johnnie had a fierce loyalty and love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; a love and loyalty that shaped his dedication to family and to the church. He will be remembered as a dedicated servant of the Lord, a beloved husband, father, papa, brother, and friend.
His greatest piece of advice was “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
Mr. Powell is survived by his wife of 66 years, Robbie A. Powell of Macon; sons, Johnnie Powell Jr. (Cindy) and Jeffrey Powell (Marilyn); grandchildren, Jay Powell (Elizabeth), Leanne Simpson (Elijah), Jamie Slaton, Meghan Reeves, Marshal Glass (Meghan), Rebecca Keene (Sean), Robert Glass (Kara), Bethany Collins (Coty), and Jeffrey Powell Jr. (Kaycee); sisters, Betty Cooly (Larry), Joan Brooks (Larry), and Marjorie Briggs (Tony); brother, Ronald Powell (Sheila); sister-in-law, Kathleen Powell; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by brothers, Donald and C.E. Powell Jr.
