Mr. John William Gilbert III, age 78, passed away on August 22, 2021.
John was born in Macon, Georgia on April 28, 1943, to John William Gilbert, Jr. and Evelyn Macon Gilbert. John graduated from Lanier High School in 1962 and then attended Middle Georgia College and Georgia Southern College. He also served as a medic in the Army National Guard. John married Judy Gilbert of Savannah, Georgia on June 4, 1967.
John was in the paint business for 50 years and owned John's Color Wheel. His knowledge of paint and expertise of color matching made him a staple figure in the Macon community. John was also very active in the Boy Scouts during his lifetime. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 16 with Troop 19. John went on to serve in many leadership roles with the Boy Scouts such as Scoutmaster of Troop 19, Committee Chair, Merit Badge Counselor and a Crew Leader on a Philmont Trek. John served as a member of the Central Georgia Council and the Ocmulgee District Committee. In 2020, John received the Silver Beaver Award which is the Council's highest award for service. He was a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association. An avid outdoorsman, John loved spending time with his family while camping, hiking, fishing, and hunting. John was also a member of the Exchange Club Member and Highland Hills Baptist Church.
John is survived by his wife, Judy Gilbert; son, Bill Gilbert; daughter-in-law, Lori Gilbert; sons, Charles Gilbert and Jim Gilbert; grandchildren, Caroline Gilbert and Charlie Gilbert; and brothers, Lyn (Anne) Gilbert and Stanley (Jane) Gilbert.
The burial will be private with a Celebration of Life to be announced at a later date.
