JoAnn was born in Covington, Georgia to the late James Frank Speer and Berta Mae Capes Speer. She was the oldest of three daughters that included her two younger sisters, Patricia and Mary. JoAnn married William “Bill” Boyce Piper, Sr. in 1953 and had three children, William Boyce, Victoria Ann and Joseph Bradley. She was blessed with a long career in nursing, which allowed her to care for hundreds of mothers and their newborns. JoAnn enjoyed traveling, quilting, and playing bridge with friends.
JoAnn was a faithful member of Riverside United Methodist Church and could often be found teaching a Sunday School Class or helping in the nursery. Her belief in the Lord was extremely important, and she found solace in daily devotionals from her Bible. JoAnn was so passionate about serving, spreading the word of God, and utilizing her nursing skills to help others that she traveled on multiple mission trips overseas. She returned from each mission with humbling, heartwarming testimonies.
JoAnn loved her family dearly and enjoyed cooking and caring for them. She was known as Meme to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she indulged with love and hugs at every opportunity. Meme was known for her great recipes and good cooking. Her family could always count on her homemade coffee cake every Christmas.
