Seldom has God given so much to many people through one woman. Our Heavenly Father saw fit to reward Jackie with her wings on January 3, 2023. Her passing reminds us that death is sure, but life is uncertain. She was born in Dublin, GA to Mint and Albert Long and grew up surrounded by her large family of eight siblings and a lot of aunts and uncles. Jackie was influenced by her family to be a loving and caring person, always giving her time to others, and she incorporated that into her motherhood. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother she was gracious, loving and kind.
Jackie was famous locally for her delicious homemade cakes baked with love and shared with many friends, neighbors, and family gatherings. She was recognized as a “Quiet Disciple” by the United Methodist Women of Gray UMC as she demonstrated the following qualities:
She followed through – on whatever she had to do.
She came through - no matter what.
She delivered the goods – whether a message or a meal.
She showed up – even early so others would not worry.
She kept her word.
She kept her commitments and appointments – you would never find her canceling.
She discharged her official duties in the church – but never neglected worship.
She was devoted to duty – just as Jesus was when He came to do His Father’s will.
As a committed follower of Jesus Christ, she was devoted to her husband, her sons, daughter, and their families and delighted in spending time with them. She is survived by her children – Russell (Ann) of Macon, Terry (Kathy) of Midway, Jack (Debbie) of Gray and Malcolm (Barbara) of Macon, sisters – Sarah Bloodworth Chitwood of Macon and Jeanette Almand of Juno, Alaska, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jackie had 14 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.
Jackie faithfully and joyfully served in many capacities in her church – Houston Ave. Christian Church and later Gray United Methodist Church. As a Sunday School teacher, chancel choir member, and women’s ministries advocate, she faithfully shared her love of people.
Jackie is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years – Allen; daughter – Connie Elizabeth; parents – Mint and Alfred Long; brothers – J.D., Alfred, Robert and sisters – Georgia Mae and Ollie. Billy Graham made a profound statement that the greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.
The celebration of her life will be led by Rev. Dr. John Haney on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at 3:00 pm in Hart’s Mortuary, Jones County Chapel in Gray. Visitation will precede the service from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Burial will be private at Cedar Ridge Cemetery.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff of John Wesley Villas, Alice Mae Farley, Tomeika Briscoe and the staff of Regency Southern Care Hospice. A special thank you to Rosa Mae Gilmore for her compassion, exceptional care, and Christian witness given during Jackie’s transition from this life into the next.
