Harriet Hicks Hays passed away peacefully in her sleep during the night of October 7th, 2023, at the age of 93. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons Cal Hays, Jr., (Sharon Hinson), son Christopher Allen Hays, (Debi Kruesel), and her sister-in-law Barbara Hays Hall. In addition, her grandchildren include James Calvin Hays III (Betsy), Blaine Charles Hays (Barbara Ann), Hinson Christopher Hays (Ilona), Hope Hays Martin(David), Cali Ruth Hays, John Ryan Hays (Kristina), Nicholas Allen Hays (Victoria), Rachel Marie Reese (Kevin), predeceased grandson Spencer Frank Hays and ten great-grandchildren.
Harriet was born in 1930 in Macon and attended Miller High School for Girls, graduating in 1948. She was married in November to her high school sweetheart Jimmy and moved to Schenectady, NY to work for GE. A few months later, Jimmy was sent to serve in the US Army during the Korean War for 3 years. Harriet loved to tell stories about living and working at Camp Stewart while he was away. After the war she worked with several companies & law firms as a legal secretary.
Harriet and Jimmy enjoyed many travels especially to Europe where they counted at least 17 trips across the pond to learn more about his ancestors in Scotland, Ireland and Germany. In their earlier days they were also known to spend time in Panacea, Florida and at the home at Lake Sinclair.
She is a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Macon. As well as a long-time Macon Garden Club member for many years.
The Hays family extends their sincere thanks to the team of caregivers that have worked tirelessly with Harriet since the loss of her husband three years ago. Lou, Valerie, Deborah, Baron, and Bessie have been a real blessing to the family during these last few years.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Riverside Cemetery Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 2:00pm with visitors greeting at the gravesite.
