Frieda Anne Headley Byrd

Frieda Anne Headley Byrd, 88, of Macon, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023. 

Frieda was born on Mundy Point near Callao, Virginia to the late Elgin Sherrard and Leah Virginia Evans Headley. She attended Mary Washington College and graduated from the University of Virginia with a BS in nursing. 

After serving in many nursing roles, her career culminated with serving as Assistant Administrator, Director of Nursing for Bulloch Memorial Hospital in Statesboro, Georgia. 

Frieda was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Nathan Cook Byrd, Jr., with whom she partnered in pastoral ministry to churches and college students, serving as co-laborer and camp nurse for state BSU events for many years.

She is survived by her children: Gyni Wood (Mark) of Dublin; Annette Wilson (Scott) of Manakin Sabot, Virginia; Nathan Byrd (Karen) of Athens; Hazel Reddick (Philip) of Augusta; and Paul Byrd (Terri) of Cumming. She was the proud grandmother of Garrison Wood, Bethany Fox, Laura Scott, Sebastian Byrd, Nick Byrd, Karlie Byrd, Turner Byrd, Evann Byrd, Gregory Reddick, Daniel Reddick and Avelyn Reddick as well as great grandchildren: Sienna, Londyn and Carson Fox; and Georgia Anne and Mary Margaret Wood.

Also surviving are her siblings: Sherrard Headley (Shirley) of Onalaska, Texas; Leah Samuelson (Gordy) of Pueblo, Colorado; and Ben Headley (Linda) of Aylett, Virginia. 

Frieda was an active member of Vineville Baptist Church where she served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, and directed the Red Cross Blood Drive.

A Celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at 11:00 am in the sanctuary of Vineville Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia, with Dr. John Pierce officiating. The family will receive friends at a fellowship meal to be served immediately following the service. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the “Nathan & Frieda Byrd Endowed Scholarship Fund” at McAfee school of Theology of Mercer University, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta, GA 30341.
