Faye Carpenter Obituary

On April 12, 2024, Faye Gantt Carpenter passed away peacefully in Tyler, Texas. She was 89.

The third of four children, Nellie Faye Gantt was born on June 3, 1934, to George Washington Gantt and Odessa Gantt (née Arey) in Faith, North Carolina. The family later settled in Elberton, Georgia, where Faye graduated from high school.

In 1953, Faye married James Chandler Carpenter. They were together for over twenty years and had two sons. A supportive mother, Faye served as a Cub Scout Leader, Baseball Team Mother, Sunday School Teacher, and according to her younger son, “a great ambulance driver taking me to get stitched up at the doctor’s office.” She was also a member of the Elks Aidmore Children’s Auxiliary and the Pine Needle Garden Club. During this time, she owned two antique stores.

Faye later went on to earn a bachelor’s degree, graduating Cum Laude from Huntingdon College, where she was a Colonial Dames Scholarship Recipient and a member of the Alpha Tau Honor Society. She worked as an administrative secretary at Georgia Tech Research Institute and Georgia Institute of Technology, from which she retired.

Friendly and sociable, Faye was always happy to visit and chat, and especially enjoyed discussing politics and history. She was knowledgeable about vintage and antique furniture and had a particular love of chairs. In her retirement, she developed an interest in genealogy and joined Daughters of the American Revolution.

Faye was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Gene Gantt (Betty), Betty Ambrose (Billy), and George Gantt (Sherryl).

She is survived by sons, James Carpenter (Dawn) of Tyler, Texas, and John Carpenter of Doraville, Georgia; and grandsons, Ellery Carpenter and Noah Carpenter.

Faye will be remembered as a loving mother, indulgent grandmother, and beautiful always.
