Emmit Steven Ayers Jr. Obituary

Born May 29, 1981, Emmit Steven Ayers Jr. died suddenly and tragically on the morning of Thursday, September 8, 2022, at the age of 41.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 17, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church. The family will greet friends in the Great Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to https://gofund.me/ef7116ca.

At the time of Steve’s death, he was serving as the Director of Youth and Children’s Ministry at Christ Church Episcopal in Macon, Georgia.  Prior to his ministry at Christ Church, Steve served as the Senior Pastor of the Oaks Baptist Church, Lyons, Georgia; Associate Minister of the First Baptist Church, Mount Airy, North Carolina; Minister to Students at the Memorial Baptist Church, Greeneville, North Carolina; and Minister of Youth at First Baptist Church, Lexington, North Carolina.  He was honored as a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina Divinity School Scholar and participated in mission initiatives in Ukraine and Belize.

Steve had a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Media Broadcasting from Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina.  He earned a Master of Divinity degree in Christian Education from Campbell University Divinity School, Buies Creek, North Carolina and was furthering his theological education at Emory University’s Chandler School of Divinity, Atlanta, Georgia.

Steve was a devoted husband and a loving father.  He had a genuine and compelling commitment to ministry, especially to young people, and invested wholeheartedly in relationships with those around him.  His passion for ministry was nearly equaled by his love for UNC Tar Heels sports.  His irrepressible laughter, welcoming spirit and encouraging words will be sorely missed.  Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Janet Holland Ayers.

He is survived by his wife, Rebekah McMahan Ayers; twin sons, Silas and Luke McMahan Ayers; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jennifer and Craig McMahan; extended family, including Nathan McMahan and Emily Ball, Hannah, Ruthie and Timothy McMahan King, Jordan McMahan, David and Sally McMahan; and a host of youth who have been touched by his life.

“Weeping may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning.”  Psalm 30:5
