Elsie Hutchings Chaffin Smith

Elsie Hutchings Chaffin Smith, 93, of Macon, Georgia passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2017. Services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 2:00PM at Forest Hills United Methodist Church with Reverend Jimmy Towson, and her nephew Reverend Wyne Hutchings officiating. Family will greet friends immediately after the service. Burial will be private. Mrs. Smith, a native of Hancock County was the daughter of the late Alwyne O. Hutchings and Fannie Underwood Hutchings. She attended Bessie Tift College and G.S.C.W. as a young woman and returned to Macon State College at the age of 50 to get her degree in nursing. She worked as an RN at the Medical Center for 22 years until her retirement. Mrs. Smith was a member of Forest Hills United Methodist Church and of the Grace Bible Class. She was a charter member of Riverside United Methodist Church where she organized the Altar Guild, was president of the Council of Ministries, and served on the Official Board and the Finance Committee. Mrs. Smith served the American Cancer Society as the first city-wide Residential Chairman. She was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Macon Little Theatre, the Macon Community Concert Association, and the Macon Bibb County Mental Health Association. She was a member of the Civic Woman's Club having held the offices of President and Treasurer. She was a member of the Sidney Lanier Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Smith loved her family and was generous with her love, advice, and support. Playing bridge was a passion of hers. She was a member of various bridge groups and taught several friends to play the game. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard Eugene Chaffin and John Wright Smith and by her brothers Alwyne O. Hutchings, Jr. and John Benjamin Hutchings. She is survived by her children, Linda Smith Bentley and John Dixon Smith of Macon; grandchildren, Lauren Rankin (Win) of Forsyth and Sallie Hart (Brett) of Macon; great grandchildren, Scott Rankin and Lucy Rankin of Forsyth and Sarah Hart of Macon; nieces, Marla Cole (Barry) and Nancy Raines (Bill) of Macon; and nephew Wyne Hutchings (Catherine) of Columbus, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Forest Hills United Methodist Church, 1217 Forest Hill Road, Macon, Georgia 31210 or to the charity of their choice.
