The Reverend Dr. John Errell Horton, Jr., 82, former United Methodist Church pastor and beloved husband, father and grandfather went to be with the Lord on March 8, 2020. A celebration of life will be held Friday, March 13, 2020 at 11:00AM at Martha Bowman United Methodist Church with Dr. Bob Moon and Reverend Mark Magoni officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Missions-Horton, South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 7227, Macon, GA 31209.
A native of Columbus, Georgia, he was a graduate of Jordan High School (1955), LaGrange College (1959), Emory University Candler School of Theology (1962) and received his Doctor of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary (1986). Dr. Horton served as a faithful pastor for 62 years in the South Georgia UMC Conference (Long Cane, Parrott, Wesley Heights, Liberty, Gray, White Bluff, Dublin and Albany) including six years as District Superintendent of the Macon District. He enjoyed playing golf, rooting for his Georgia Bulldogs and attending his grandchildren’s soccer games. He was a humble and gifted church leader, preaching the word of God boldly from any pulpit he filled. Dr. Horton was known for his integrity, repeatedly standing up for what was right. He was preceded in death by his parents John Errell Horton, Sr. and Lottie Mae Reid Horton; his sisters Helen June Horton Workman and Gloria Horton Claiborne; and his former wife Mary Wright Horton.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Little Horton; five daughters, Jennifer Leigh Horton of Columbus, Georgia, Jan Horton Spence (Mitchell) of Jacksonville, Florida, Jamie Horton Swartzendruber (Jacob) of Charlotte, North Carolina; Krista Davis Breedlove (Jason) of Athens, Georgia, and Ashley Davis Dorough of Macon; seven adoring grandchildren, Cole, Harrison, Caitlin, and Julia Breedlove and Casey, Savannah, and Hadley Dorough; two sisters, Mary Joyce Waltz (Alan) of Lombard, Illinois and Brenda Horton Tasker (the late J.W.) of Johns Creek, Georgia; one brother, Larry Franklin Horton (Judy) of Wiley, Georgia.
