Dr. Hines Lawrence Wommack Obituary

Dr. Hines Lawrence Wommack, 92, of Macon, Georgia, died on Monday, July 3, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Hart’s at the Cupola.  The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the Cupola and will also have a Celebration of Life following the service in the Carlyle Place Grand. Interment will be private.

Hines was born on October 7, 1930, in Washington County, Georgia, to Archie and Mary Lou Lawrence Wommack.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Arnold Wommack, sisters, Virginia Wommack, Vivian Sumner (JB), Lina Pritchett (Charlie), Grace Baldwin (James “Buddy”), Hazel Smith (Dan), Edna Wommack, sister-in-law, Becky Oliver Wommack, and nephew, Roy Stapleton.

Hines is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Carter Wommack; daughter, Beth Zoumberis (David); and three grandchildren:  Luke, Carter, and Mary Klaire Zoumberis.  He is also survived by a special son, Jeorg Neerman (of Munich, Germany) who was a foreign exchange student that resided with the Wommack family for a year.  Over the last several decades, Jeorg, his wife Petra, and sons Nils and Jost, have visited often, and are a special part of the family.  Hines is also survived by twelve nieces and nephews, as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Hines graduated from Harrison High School in Washington County, Georgia.  He received a BA from Oglethorpe University, a MED from Georgia College, and a PHD from Indiana University.

Throughout his life, Hines had a love for learning.  He especially enjoyed foreign languages, literature, history, music, the Bible, and traveling.  Hines served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954.  In 1952, he was aboard the USS Sarsi ATF off the coast of North Korea when the ship struck a mine at midnight. 95 of the 100 sailors aboard were saved by nearby U.S. Navy ships after the crew spent a cold night in the water.  Hines also served in the U.S. Peace Corps from 1965-1967, and taught languages at Arabic Training College in Sokoto, Nigeria, and at Government College in Keffi, Nigeria.

Hines taught students at the elementary, middle, high school, and college level.  Hines spent the majority of his teaching career at RESA working with teacher education and planning both in Statesboro, and Americus, Georgia.  After his retirement, he continued teaching French for brief periods both at the high school and college level.  Retirement also provided a better opportunity for travel and discovering new interests.

Since 2010, Hines has lived at Carlyle Place in Macon with his wife Barbara.  He was an active member of the Joy Sunday School class at Mulberry St. United Methodist Church until his health kept him in the Carlyle Health Areas.  The family is especially appreciative of the care he received from the staff in Cambridge Court at Carlyle Place. The family also wants to thank his his loving and thoughtful helper, Janice Gail.
