Obituary

Dennis Dwane McCain “Papa”, 73, of Macon, Georgia, passed away on July 26, 2023. As a 33-year veteran of both the Air Force and Army, he will be cremated and then buried with his wife’s ashes at the Georgia National VA Cemetery in Canton, Georgia on August 18, 2023, with full Military Honors at 9:30am. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at the American Legion in Alpharetta, Georgia from 12pm-5pm where everyone is invited to enjoy lunch and share stories.

Son of the late Chuck Smith and Wanda Faye Peterson, Dennis was born in Wagoner, Oklahoma and was raised between there and California. Dennis was a retired Master Sergeant (MSG) in the United States Army with over 30 years of service. He initially began his military career in the Air Force as a Vietnam Era Veteran. He graduated from Moorpark College in California with an associate in arts (AA) in General Studies. He married the love of his life Carollyn in 1972 and they went on to have four children. Dennis was Supervisor of Security of a casino in Las Vegas, Nevada for fifteen years prior to going into active-duty Army in Washington State for eight years before retiring at age 62. He then proceeded to move to Georgia after the sudden passing of his wife of 40 years in 2012 where he remained until his own recent passing.

Dennis was a very loving man of God who enjoyed his morning coffee combined with Fox News, was a diehard Rams fan having been able to see them win the Super Bowl twice during his lifetime, loved all science fiction movies especially King Kong and Godzilla, adored all the Jurassic Park movies as well as Jumanji in the last few years of his life, was a true Star Trek fan and watched all shows pertaining to, was an avid reader during his lifetime and loved all things Politics and History, especially War History with the Battle of Gettysburg being his favorite, loved wearing baseball caps and logo shirts with a fanny pack to match, had two amazing cats that acted as his companions and were referenced as his “gangster cats” with the names Charlie Luciano and Louie, never thought a TV could be too big as he had a 65” in his bedroom with hopes for an 80”, was lovingly referred to as “Dreamboat” by his Mother, his favorite color was red, was a huge fan of John Wayne, loved to take cruises and trips with his kids and grandchildren to various places, was the “life of the party” and could dance like none other, and most importantly he loved his family so deeply and unconditionally acting as his sole purpose in life.

Dennis’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family and all those blessed to have known him. He will be remembered not only for his service to his country but also for his unending love for his family. His passing is a reminder of the fleeting nature of life, and the importance of cherishing the moments we have with our loved ones. Dennis’s life serves as a beacon of dedication, love, and passion, and his memory will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Dennis is survived by his Daughter Julie Mathis (Shane Mathis), Son David Dwane McCain (Carie McCain), Daughter Kristan Markovits (Ken Markovits) and Son Adam McCain; six grandchildren and four Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by two Sisters, several nieces and nephews as well as many extended family members.
