Today, we said goodbye to our mom, Betty Lou Powell, 74, of Macon Georgia. She passed away peacefully at home with family by her side on Friday, April 21st, 2023.
She was born in Dublin, Georgia, on March 17th of 1949 to the late Curtis Ashley and Veneree Powell, and was preceded in death by her daughters, Laurie Ann Ashley and Dana Hazard, as well as her brother Grady Ashley. Moma was overflowing with love and ready to give all she had to those around her. She was creative, strong, and completely dedicated to her children and family. In her youth, she worked at Krispy Kreme, Merita Bakery, The Macon Telegraph, and as a hairdresser before landing her dream job of being a mom and raising her eight children in a safe and happy home. She loved gardening, picking and shelling peas, and listening to older country and gospel music. She also enjoyed singing, working in the yard, taking long walks, and was an outstanding cook. Some of the happiest family moments were spent doing a combination of those activities together with those she loved.
Moma’s most enduring legacy was her devotion to her family. She will be dearly missed by her children [Tammie Bryant of Macon, Georgia; Michelle Main (Scott) of Macon, Georgia; Theron Bryant (Cristy) of Gray, Georgia; Diana Raper (Scott) of Byron, Georgia; Melissa Tafilaku (Myzi) of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina; and Dawn Powell of Macon, Georgia], grandchildren (Ashlyn, Erica, Jameson, Mason, Makenna, Malley, Hannah, Hunter, Harley, Triton, Cason, Haleigh, Sam, Ethan, Katie, Nick, and Adrian), and great-grandchildren (Erilyn, Jaxxon, Sadie, Mollie, and Beau), whom she adored. Additionally, she is survived by her loving ex-husband, Keith Powell, life-long friend Karen Cromer (Josh, Daniel, Kyley, Larry, Amarion, and Bletty), and siblings [Barbara Ann Sauls (Herman) of Eatonton, Georgia; Gladys Mobley of Centre, Alabama; Billy Wayne Ashley of Fairburn, Georgia; Latricia Manuel of Villa Rica, Georgia; and Danny Ray Ashley (Janice) of Kennesaw, Georgia], as well as numerous other family members who loved and treasured her.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a time and place to be determined in the future.
When She Wakes
By Dawn Powell
I love you Mom, Now and forever
I think she’ll wake up in a beautiful garden
Green grass and flowers full of every hue
Watered with the love she spread to all she knew
Nourished by the dreams she helped come true
I think she’ll wake up smiling
Finally able to feel all the love for her we had
A love that, in the toughest times, was ironclad
Her heart so full, there’s no room left for anything sad
I think she’ll wake up laughing
Thinking of all the happiness in times past
And how those memories will eternally last
In the minds and hearts of those who knew her best
I think she’ll wake up washed clean
Free of all the pain she had to endure
The wounds won’t be seen or felt anymore
The demons finally banished from her soul’s door
I think she’ll wake up free
Everything that held her down in life long gone
All the battles she faced overcome and won
In the hands of the Father and finally home
I know she’ll wake up ready
To be welcomed by all those who’ve gone before
And make places for those of us who must live some more
And make a clear path leading us to her door
With our beloved mom, once again and forever more
