William Odell Scarbrough, Jr., “Bill”, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, February 19, 2024 at the age of 84.
Born in Atlanta, Bill was an only child of William Odell Scarbrough and Julia Sherwood Scarbrough. Bill graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a BA, MA in Business Administration. Serving in the U.S. Army, Bill was assigned to language school in Monterey, California, learning Mandarin Chinese and completing his military assignment as a Chinese linguist. He also played basketball on the Army’s first integrated team, playing in tournaments all over the world. His love for children was manifested throughout the years in his faithfulness to mentoring, tutoring, coaching, directing Upward Basketball, and Mission Friends.
Bill entered the insurance industry following college and was owner of Scarbrough Insurance Agency of Macon and Sandersville until his retirement in August 2023.
Bill is survived by his wife; three sons and daughters-in-law, five grandsons, two granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be at Hart’s Mortuary Cherry Street Chapel Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Special Olympics of Central Georgia, Area 7, Attn: Jesse Griggers-Treasurer, 6801 Mosely Dixon Road, Macon, Georgia 31220-9518, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org/donate, or the donor’s personal choice.
