William E. "Mitch" Mitchell, Sr.

October 19, 1931 — September 22, 2014

William E. "Mitch" Mitchell, Sr., went home Monday, September 22, 2014, following a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 25, 2014, at 11AM, in the Chapel of Ingleside Baptist Church. Dr. Tim McCoy and Dr. Mark Hudgins will officiate. The family will greet friends from 10AM until 11AM in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice Advantage, 3902 Northside Drive, suite 83, Macon, Ga 31210 or Ingleside Baptist Church Missions, 834 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA 31210. Mr. Mitchell fought the good fight and finished the race with courage and dignity. A true man of God who loved his wife, children and grandchildren more than life itself. Mitch was born in Toccoa, Georgia on October 19, 1931. Preceded in death by his father Rubush James Mitchell and mother, Margaret West Mitchell, two sisters, Margaret Mitchell and Jayne M. Huckaby. He was an active member of Ingleside Baptist Church where he served for many years in a number of capacities, Deacon, Youth Leader, Training Union Director, Volunteer for Macon Outreach. Mitch played third base as well as coaching the IBC church softball team, was a member of the Gift Bible Study. He was involved with the public school system athletic programs, mentoring young men and coaching football, basketball and baseball. A graduate of Thomasville High School where he lettered in four sports. He played quarterback in the "High School All Star Game" in Atlanta. A graduate of Tennessee Tech University where he received a full athletic scholarship. Played in the 1953 "Tangerine Bowl' game in Orlando, Florida. Mitch was an Ohio Valley conference champion pole vaulter. Inducted into the Thomasville, Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Following college he served in the United States Army and later worked with Vocational Rehabilitation in the state of Tennessee as Assistant State Director of OASI. He and his family moved to Macon in 1963 to work with his brother in the cabinet business and later launched his own business, Mitchell Construction Company. The Mitchell family was honored in 1975 as the Macon Service League's "Family of the Year". He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jan S. Mitchell, three daughters and one son, Lynn M. Taylor (David), Meg M. Smith, Julie M. Chambers (Mark) and Mitch Mitchell, Jr.; seven grandchildren, Derek H. Taylor (Ashley), Eden H. Taylor (Autumn), Rachael Smith Wood, Victoria Smith, Brooke B. Money, Cameron Burkhalter, Ryder Seigle, Sydney Chambers; eight great-grandchildren, and his faithful and loving brother and sister-in-law, R. Jim Mitchell (Elouise) and several nieces and nephews.
