William Eugene Hollis, Sr.

Funeral services for William Eugene Hollis, Sr. will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 10:00AM at Martha Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will be immediately following at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00PM to 7:00PM Monday, March 12 at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Martha Bowman UMC, 500 Bass Road, Macon, GA 31210. Mr. Hollis and his twin sister, were born in Macon, Georgia. He graduated from Lanier School for Boys and enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on the aircraft carrier, Kula Gulf. After returning home from the war, he married his sweetheart, Clara Allee Gardiner on June 15, 1949. They enjoyed 68 years together before her death in June 2017. Mr. Hollis attended Georgia Tech and completed his degree in Architecture at Southern Technical College. After working for Ella Mae League and Elliott Dunwody, he was a principal in the Macon architectural firm Matthews, Holliday, Couch and Hollis (which became Holliday, Couch, Hollis and Jelks.) He worked on many phases of the Macon Hospital (Medical Center of Central Georgia) from the 1950s to the 1980s. His work included churches, schools, hospitals and homes in Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and Louisiana. Bill Hollis was a builder, engineer, handyman and counselor to his family. His ability to design, create, complete and repair anything in life was a given for his children. He was a recreational pilot and built his own Ultralight airplane. Mr. Hollis was a member of Martha Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and taught Sunday School for years. He faithfully and quietly opened the church each Sunday for 35 years. Together with his wife, he became an active volunteer for the American Red Cross in Disaster Relief Services in his 70's and 80's. He is predeceased by his wife, Allee Gardiner Hollis; his son, William Eugene Hollis, Jr.; his parents, Charles Burton Hollis, Jr. and Mary Ruth Searcy Hollis; his siblings Charles Burton Hollis, III, Searcy John Hollis, Ardell O'Connor Hollis, Robert David Hollis and Ruth Hollis Bason. Mr. Hollis is survived by his daughters, Sydney Sams (Alfred, Jr.) and Dr. Roberta (Andrews) Dixon (Mike); daughter-in-law, Karen Murphy Hollis; grandchildren, T. Alfred Sams, III (Riley), William E. Hollis, III, Hollis Sams Marbut (Thomas), Allee Dixon Avery (Joe), Charles R. Hollis (Anna), Christopher M. Dixon (Laura), Kelly Dixon Simons (Ronnie); ten great-grandchildren, who all affectionately called him "Gump"; sister-in-law, Roberta Robinson and brother-in-law, Dr. George Gardiner. The family thanks his special caregivers, Rose Sanders and Celena Williams and those with Loving Heart Companion Services - Rosalind Benjamin, Chadis Darrisaw, Sheila Sands and Sylvia Scott.
