William (Bill) Eugene Hunnicutt

July 6, 1934 — September 25, 2018

William Eugene (Bill) Hunnicutt, 84, passed away September 25, 2018 after a lengthy illness.  Bill was born July 6, 1934 in Macon, GA.  Bill retired after many years as a Conductor for The Norfolk-Southern Railway.  Due to family illness, his memorial service had been postponed until family could be assembled.

In 1972, Bill owned The Yamaha Shop in Valdosta along with Dr. Mitt Roby. Due to his love of motorcycles, he became very competitive racing motorcycles and Enduro's before he was involved in a horrific accident during a race that ended his motorcycle career and nearly ended his ability to walk.

During 1978, Bill noticed the popularity of "customized" vans in magazines and books, and he opened Custom Van Works in Valdosta.  He customized many vans including custom carpet, special windows, T-tops, captain chairs and woodwork. He could see a wooden table or bench in a magazine and duplicate it in his shop.

Bill’s extraordinary work with his hands began as a young boy working with leather, and later in his life he was recognized by many in the leather-working community as one of the very best in the business.  He was an active member of the Single Action Shooting Society for many years, and he designed and made leather belts, and western shooting accessories such as holsters, ammunition belts and gun belts.  He redesigned the western holster for quick-draw competitions, and built many custom rigs for some of the best-known competitors.  His leather work became so well-known that he was asked to replicate Clayton Moore’s Lone Ranger holster rig for a nationally known network sportscaster’s collection.

Bill and his wife Kay Hunnicutt will be remembered at a memorial service on October 9, 2020 at 1:00 pm in Macon Memorial Park, 3969 Mercer University Drive, Macon, GA.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverside United Methodist Church, 735 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
