William Reginald Cowan, Sr. was born in Griffin, Georgia, on May 15, 1930 to Ruth Jackson and Grover E. Cowan. Reggie died at Coliseum Medical Center on May 29, 2009, after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Grover Cowan, sister, Jeanette Cowan, brother, Jack A. Cowan, nephew, Hank Rhodes.
Reggie attended Griffin High School and attended college in Charleston, SC during the time he served in the Navy as Chief Petty Officer. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked at Griffin Sales and Service and in 1956 with Georgia Power Company in residential sales, retiring after 30 years of service. He was a member of Riverside United Methodist and the Woodruff Sunday School Class. As a member of the Optimist Club, he served in many capacities and as a Zone Lt. Governor. He was a 50 year Mason and has lived in Macon for 51 years.
He is survived by Barbara Grant Cowan, wife of fifty six years; daughter, Jan Alligood (Butch) of Newnan, GA; son, Chip Cowan (Paula) of Macon, GA; Grandchildren, Brad Alligood (Elaine) of Valdosta GA; Brandi (Brent) Caldwell of Fort Stewart, GA; Billy (Dohleah), Katie, Zach, Cole, and Jay Cowan all of Macon, GA; three great grandchildren, Angel and Thomas Caldwell, and Sophia Cowan; sister, Vermodis Slade of Summerville, SC; brother, Clifford Cowan (Pat) of Bradenton, FL; Nieces, Petra Perdue, Jenny Smith, Betsy Mitchum and Judy Doucet; Nephews, Kenneth Cowan, Mike Slade, David Rhodes, Mark, Billy, and Michael Cowan.
The Reverend John Irwin and the Reverend Steve Waldorf will conduct services for Reggie at Hart's Mortuary Chapel at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road at 11AM on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, followed by a Masonic Service. The members of the Woodruff Sunday School Class will sit as a group for the service. Burial will follow in the Fincher's Memorial Cemetery in Pike County starting at 3PM. Afterwards,the family invites everyone to Fincher's Methodist Church (across from the cemetery) for refreshments. Family will greet friends at Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola from 6PM until 8PM on Monday June 1, 2009.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish, make memorial contributions to the American Kidney Fund, the American Heart Association or to Riverside United Methodist Church.
