Virginia King Nirenstein

June 15, 1920 — December 27, 2012

Virginia King Nirenstein passed away on December 27, 2012 after a brief illness. She was born June 15, 1920, the daughter of Sara Poe and Henry P. King of Atlanta, Georgia, and was the great-granddaughter of Washington Poe, the second Mayor of Macon. This connection seemed to give her life a sense of direction and purpose as she always honored family ties and enjoyed studying American history. She grew up in Macon attending Miller High School. She had a background in the Presbyterian and Episcopal Church. She was married for 49 years to the late Isadore Nirenstein. She worked for Robins Air Force Base during World War II, but later would work in retail and banking. She had retired from the C & S Bank in 1973. During the later years in her life she had been a compassionate caregiver to her two beloved aunts whom she enabled to live out their final years in dignity in their private home. This certainly was a shining testimonial to her love of family and God. In 1984 she published the historical novel With Kindly Voices, which many universities and colleges gave accolades and good reviews and placed in their campus libraries. She also worked in this era as a tour guide for the Hay House where she shared her knowledge of Macon history with numerous tourists and visitors. She is survived by her two sons, David Nirenstein of Macon and J. Michael King of Pamplico, South Carolina; grandsons, Ben Nirenstein, U. S. Navy, Pensacola, Florida, Cord King of Summerville, South Carolina and Scott King of Pamplico, South Carolina, and one great-grandchild. Services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 3:00PM in the Chapel of Hart's Mortuary, Cherry Street, with Brother Rob Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Saturday from 2:00PM until 3:00PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to Middle Georgia Christian School, 5859 Thomaston Road, Macon, Georgia 31220. Register online at www.hartsmort.com. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory, Cherry Street, has charge of arrangements.
