Vesta Knighton Porter, 96, of Macon, GA, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2022. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 8, 2022, at 3:00 p.m.at Hart’s Chapel at the Cupola with the Reverends Bill Neely and Missy Blumenthal officiating. Also speaking will be Ann Brooks and Chuck Brooks. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Transylvania University, 300 North Broadway, Lexington, KY 40508 or donor’s favorite charity.
Daughter of the late Marvin Russell and Ruth Cleveland Cogland Knighton, Mrs. Porter was born in Cairo, Georgia but moved to Miami, Florida when she was a child, where she attended Coral Gables Christian Church. During her youth, she was active in her church and Christian related activities. She became a regional officer and an and active member of United Christian Youth Movement which was pursuing the ecumenical movement and social justice issues. Her activities earned her a scholarship to attend Lynchburg College to study Christian education.
Mrs. Porter was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Robert Lee Porter. She met her late husband at Lynchburg College where he was preparing for the ministry. They married and while he completed his seminary education, she continued her education graduating from Transylvania University. She focused her studies on preparing for a life of Christian ministry with her husband, including both Christian education and music and voice lessons.
As Reverend Porter began his ministry in Kentucky and then in Macon, Georgia, she became an active partner with him throughout his ministry. She was active in Christian education for youth and adults, leading and singing in choirs while teaching youth and adult Sunday School classes over the years, as well as, serving in many Christian leadership roles. Mrs. Porter had a beautiful voice and sang at many funerals and weddings. She was a very giving, caring person, who helped many people all over Macon.
Mrs. Porter was a member of St. Andrews Christian Church, formerly Houston Avenue Christian Church, and an associate member of Shurlington United Methodist Church. She was a past member of Woodland Christian Church.
Mrs. Porter is survived by her children, Robert Lee Porter, Jr. (Deborah) of Douglas, Georgia, Marlene P. Sallee (Brett) of Louisville, Kentucky, and Gary Russell Porter (Rhonda) of Macon; ten grandchildren, Alissa Evans (Gabe), Lindsey Speranza (David), Aaron Fossaluzza, Anthony Fossaluzza (Jacke), Amy Nelson (Charles), Harley Sallee, Clayton Sallee, Jessica Little, Mandy Woodall (John), and Warren Morgan; 10 great grandchildren, Reese Evans, Brennan Evans, Porter Speranza, Andrew Speranza, Eleanor Fossaluzza, Ivy Fossaluzza, Charlie Nelson, Alicia Woodall, Bella Little, and Reed Little; four nieces, Ruth Years, Christy Duane, Jean Nutting (Mike) Leslie Misiti (Larry); nephew, James Porter; and cousin, Gary Knighton.
