Gray

Vashti Maxwell Carr, 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Gray, Georgia on January 11, 2024 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Macon, Georgia in 1936, she grew up in Danville and graduated from Miller High School in Macon.  She went on to graduate from Mercer University and taught school in Louisville, Kentucky before becoming a full-time mother to her three sons.  After living in several other cities, she moved to Gray in 1974 and, for many years, was a kindergarten teaching assistant and substitute teacher at Gray Elementary, touching the lives of many children.  She also served as the church organist at the First Baptist Church of Thomaston and Elam Baptist Church of Gray and played at many local weddings and funerals over the years.

She is survived by her loving husband of over 66 years, B. C. Carr, and by her sons, Chuck Carr of Burien, Washington, and John (Marie) Carr of Charlotte, North Carolina.  She is also survived by her granddaughters, Catherine Carr (David Kornfield) of Los Angeles, California, and Natalie Carr (Victor Cannestro) of Burien, Washington, by her sister, Delle Carroll of Stockbridge, Georgia and by her niece, Celia Balis of Locust Grove, Georgia.  She was preceded in death by her son, William “Billy” Carr, and by her parents, John and Mamie Delle Maxwell.

The family would like to thank her wonderful, loving caregivers Freda Pounds, Michelle Dumas, Cynthia Howard, Jaelynn Bledsoe, and Lynne Ferrell, who are truly angels sent from heaven.  The family would also like to thank the friends and neighbors in Gray, especially Maggie and Ryan Renner, who have been supportive in so many ways.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Hart’s Mortuary Jones County at 307 Pecan Lane, Gray, Georgia.  A graveside service will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at the Danville City Cemetery at 340 3rd Street, Danville, Georgia.
