Vandiver Fain Mcmullan

June 19, 1935 — July 18, 2015

Macon, GA - Vandiver Fain McMullan, who died Saturday, July 18, lived 80 years to the fullest. Known for his proficiency as a pilot, hunter, skeet shooter, scuba diver, golfer, tennis player, pool shark and skydiver, all pursuits for which he had the appropriate attire [yard sale notice to follow], he was a formidable competitor and took no prisoners. His inactive hobbies included reading fluffy romance novels, drinking single malt scotch, sitting poolside listening to music and spending many hours in his recliner watching Pawn Stars, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood always with Coco, his favorite dog, by his side. Known as a true southern gentleman fiercely devoted to his family, he also had an acerbic wit, but never failed to show warmth and generosity to his wide circle of friends. Fain loved nothing more than hosting parties at his historic antebellum home on Rogers Avenue where he surrounded himself with neighbors, family, friends and a passel of German shepherds. However, his favorite spot was in the rocking chair on the grand front porch, alone with his thoughts and a few dogs, occasionally visiting with a neighbor. Professionally, Fain was a partner with his wife, Charlotte, in their CPA firm, McMullan and McMullan for 40 years. He attributed the success of their business partnership to their separate rides to and from work each day. Many extended family meals were shared around the conference room table for much needed breaks during the chaos of tax season. Woefully outnumbered by women both at home and at work, he would occasionally grumble about his circumstances, something the women took with a grain of salt, for they knew his complaints were a façade for a man that loved strong women and held them in high regard. After retiring, Fain spent time with Charlotte in a less taxing relationship, enjoying a full transition to passive hobbies and indulging grandchildren, but still challenging the occasional visitor to a pool game in his new man cave. Coco the poodle, his faithful companion, was the only family member with the patience to accompany Fain on his slow walks around the backyard. Fain is survived by wife, Charlotte, daughters, Cathy Umstead (Alan) of Nashville, TN, Karen Feicht Capps (Phillip) of Macon and Maureen Feicht Howard (Frank) of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Audrey Howard and Aaron of Howard of Cincinnati; dear friend, Charles Collins and his poodle, Coco. He was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley McMullan and husband-in-law, Carl Feicht. Fain was a superb father, grandfather, friend and colleague. Eighty years is a long time, but too short for a man who will be sorely missed. The family will begin receiving friends at 4:00 PM on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at Hart's at the Cupola. The remembrance program will begin at 4:30 PM, with a reception following. Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels at www.mealsonwheelsmidga.com. Register online at www.hartsmort.com. Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, has charge of arrangements.
