Dr. Tracie Meadow Jenkins, Professor Emeritus of Insect Genetics at the University of Georgia fostered the environment of inclusion. She was born (1945) in Tampa, FL to Lucille and Joseph Jones Meadow. Later in life she was nourished by a loving stepmother, Hazel Hutchinson Meadow. She believed that anyone can grow into something beautiful. She strived to be the reason someone smiles, feels loved and believes in the goodness in others. Her laughter would light up a room!
Dr. Jenkins lived a life of curiosity supported by the love of learning. She had multiple academic degrees in the fields of Liberal Arts, Biology, Medical Technology and Zoology. She was most proud of her PhD in Population Genetics from the University Georgia that she earned while in her forties. After post doctorate positions she joined UGA’s department of Entomology with a lab on its Griffin campus. Her research on the evolutionary biology of termites and other insects took her to many locations in the USA, Brazil, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and France. Her scientific contributions, presentations, and publications were numerous.
Tracie’s love of teaching began at Americus High School in the early years of integration and continued in various settings including the North Carolina Cherokee Reservation High School, Mercer University’s Upward Bound Summer Program, and the Appleton Episcopal Ministries Freedom School. Her teaching in higher education inspired many students to develop their intellectual potential and become life-long learners.
Inquiry and exploration were valuable instruments in formation of Dr. Jenkins’ spiritual life. She completed the three-year program of Theological Education for Ministry (EFM) administered by the School of Theology of the University of the South (Sewanee). She served two terms as Senior Warden at St. Francis Episcopal Church (Macon), and was elected to the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta.
Her Macon community contributions included the Macon Arts Alliance, and the steering committee of Georgia Women (And Those Who Stand with Us). She was a founding member and two term Board President of the St. Francis Art Center. She was a Master Naturalist and Master Gardener. She was also a wildlife photographer.
Her love of family nourished her enthusiasm for life. Tracie and Barry were married for over 55 years and created a supportive team that set an example for others. She is survived by her husband, Dr. J. Barry Jenkins; her loving son, John (Aura-Leigh); granddaughter, Brenna; grandson, Leigh; brother Joe Meadow, III; step brother, Craig Meadow and many nieces and nephews.
