Macon

Tommy Lowe III, 85, of Macon, passed away at his home on Thursday, January 27, 2022.  The family will greet friends on Thursday, February 3, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hart’s Mortuary at the Cupola.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022, at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. June O’Neal will be speaking at the service.

Tommy was born on November 28, 1936, in Douglas, Georgia, to the late Tom Lowe, Sr. and Beatrice Purvis Lowe.  He lived in Macon all of his life.  He attended Weir Elementary School and was a 1955 graduate of Lanier High School for Boys, where he was a member of the ROTC.  After graduating high school, Tommy proudly served two years in the United States Navy as a gunner’s mate on the USS Vesole, and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.

He joined the Houston Avenue Christian Church in Macon as a teenager and remained a member of that denomination all his life.  He was friends with his Pastor, Reverend Bob Porter, until he passed in 2011.  As a teenager and briefly after his return home from the Navy, Tommy worked in the family business, Lowe’s Service Station on Broadway.  There he learned work ethic that served him well all of his life.  Tommy and his father decided to buy land on Hartley Bridge Road and had a golf course built after some discussions with family and close friends.  A professional golf course architect from Atlanta was hired to lay out the design and set the dream into motion.  It took almost a year of hard work and many hours of endless consultations for Bridgewood Golf Club, a regulation nine hole golf course to become a reality.  It opened for paying customers on January 1, 1960.  For about three months prior to the official opening of Bridgewood, every golfer they knew or happened by played for free.

Tommy’s love for golf began at Bowden Golf Course in Macon when he began caddying for the late Mr. James Roundtree and Mr. A.G. Persons.  Tommy’s father bought Tommy’s first set of golf clubs from Bowden Pro, Mr. Hugh Moore.  He bought right-handed clubs even though Tommy was left-handed, as they were all that were available at that time at the Pro Shop.  Tommy was soon playing golf in amateur golf tournaments in Macon and the Middle Georgia area.  He played in the prestigious Peach Blossom tournament at  Idle Hour Country Club and played well with many of the players and members commenting on his long shots off the tee.

After Bridgewood officially opened, Tommy was informed that he could no longer play as an amateur.  He attended the P.G.A. Business School in Dallas, Texas, and took the courses necessary to become a P.G.A. Professional. He joined the P.G.A of America and the Georgia Section of the P.G.A.

Mr. Harley Bowers, the Sports Editor of the Macon Telegraph heard reports of Tommy’s long drives and the newly opened course, and he decided to come out and see for himself.  He was greatly impressed and featured an article in the Telegraph with Tommy’s picture and the news that Tommy might be the longest hitter in the state.  Tommy was averaging 300 plus yards off the tee.  A lot of long driving contests and a lot of long hitters shared the spotlight. Tommy was always humble and gave credit to all the people who supported him, especially to the pros who helped him with his game.  Tommy worked hard on the course with course maintenance and giving lessons and playing in tournaments and always sharing his time with his customers.

He played in numerous Professional tournaments in Georgia and Florida and met many professionals that he developed long term friendships with.  He enjoyed playing in Pro-Am tournaments with a group of amateurs from Bridgewood who became some of his best friends.

Tommy was a very proud of his children.  His son, Tommy (Tee Bo), worked at the golf course for several years and played as an amateur and later as a professional.  They both had a love of the land and were adamant about the upkeep of the golf course. His daughter, Wendy, became a nurse and he was very proud of her. He now has three grandsons who are carrying on the golf legacy their “Papa” left them.

In 2005, Tommy sold the golf course but kept several acres and lived out his life on the land he loved.  Today, Bridgewood is a subdivision, but for over 40 years it was the home course to many area golfers.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his “other mother,” Edna Sakell; his in-laws, James Allen Stokes, Sr., and Annie Belle Jackson Stokes; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and many close friends.

He is survived by his son, Tommy Lowe (Joy Benson), of Ocala, Florida; daughter, Wendy Lowe Leblanc (Steve), of Augusta, Georgia; granddaughter, Misty Lowe Miecznikowski (Peter), of Warner Robins, Georgia; grandchildren, Tyler Lowe, of Phoenix, Arizona, Stirling Arnold, of Atlanta, Georgia, Blake Arnold, attending college in Dahlonega, Georgia, and Amelia and Lukasz Miecznikowski  of Warner Robins, Georgia; and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tommy’s honor to any animal rights group of donor’s choice.
