Thomas Harrison Winchester, Jr., 94, of Macon, died at 6:45am, Tuesday, March 31, 2015 surrounded by family in Savannah, Ga. He spent the last twelve years at Carlyle Place Senior Living Community in Macon and before that enjoyed living in his home on Marshall Dr. in Macon for over 50 years. Thomas is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Turner Winchester, son James Ridout Winchester of Augusta, Ga. and sisters Laura Winchester Hawkins and Harriotte Winchester Hurley both of Fernandina, Fl. Thomas is survived by his granddaughters Elizabeth Winchester Heim (Luke) of Marietta, Ga and Sarah Winchester Woods (Jason) of Savannah, Ga, and five great grandchildren. Thomas is also survived by his sons' family of second marriage Beth Dumnesil Winchester of Augusta, Ga, Jeremy Fare (Julia) of Atlanta and Jessica Fare Eubanks (Robbie) of Washington, Ga, and four step great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Friday April 3, 2015 at 3pm. with visitation at 2:30pm in the undercroft. Thomas is the son of late Thomas H. Winchester, Sr. and Laura Dodson Winchester. He was born February 7, 1921 in Pittsburg, PA and moved to Macon at the age of four. He was in Troop 5 BSA from 1933-1935 and attained the rank of First Class. In the early 1960's he served as an Asst. Scout Master. He graduated from Lanier High School in 1939 and received a BS in Civil Engineering from GA Tech in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1943 to December 1945 and was stationed in England, France and Germany with the 333rd Engineer SS Regiment. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, served on the Vestry for 25 years and held the office of Junior and Senior Warden. He was Construction President for St. Paul Village and served time as Vice President. He was a registered Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor and maintained an office in Macon for forty years eventually named "Winchester and Hurley" after his nephew Robert Hurley joined him in business. He was a member, past President and Outstanding Exchangite of the Exchange Club of Macon. He was a Director of the Ga State Fair for 22 years and a past President. He was a life member and past President of the Surveying and Mapping Society of GA., American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. He also held membership in the Society of American Military Engineers and the American Legion in which he was a past Post Commander of Post 3. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the rank of Colonel. He loved Macon and being part of its community. He was loyal, honorable, happy and fun loving. His joy for life is an inspiration and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A quote we often heard from him was "Good clean living pays off every time".
