Thomas Nelson Kight, 81, of Macon, Georgia, died peacefully at home on Sunday, August 22. Born in Macon on November 14, 1939, Tom spent his childhood in Byromville, where his father, Davis L. Kight, Sr., was pastor of Byromville Baptist Church. The family moved to Macon when Tom was 16.
Tom attended Lanier High School in Macon. He graduated from Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Florida, Mobile (Alabama) College, and Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He served as pastor of churches in Middleburg, North Carolina and Crestone, Colorado. He worked for the Economic Opportunity Council in Macon and retired after 15 years, assisting many people with housing and utilities. Tom also worked as a piano tuner, a skill he learned as a teenager working for the tuner Ben Manley.
Tom was the sixth generation of the Thomas family to live in Bibb County. The Thomas family farm was located on Hartley Bridge Road where Rutland High School now sits. The road to the school is named George Thomas Lane after George Thomas, the father of Tom’s mother, Lucile Thomas Kight.
Tom was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Macon. Tom was a good and kind man who loved helping people. He enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves games and old Perry Mason reruns on tv, playing Scrabble, and napping with his little dachshund, Missy.
Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years, Hilary Watson Kight of Macon; two sons, Stephen Kight of Cumming and Joel Kight of Athens; brother Charles Kight of Macon; sister Donna Nichols of Athens; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Davis L. Kight, Jr.
The family thanks Dr. Ihab Zaggout and the staff at U.S. 1 Renal Dialysis Center for their kind and compassionate care over the past few years, as well as Tamika Scott and Angela Johnson from Interim HealthCare of Macon.
