The Rev. David Philip Muth

September 23, 1933 — September 15, 2018

The Reverend David Phillip Muth passed away September 15, 2018, after a fight with cancer and sepsis, surrounded by his family.

David was born September 23, 1933, to the late Philip and Dorothy Muth in New Orleans, LA, where he grew up with his twin brother Donald. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and was attending Loyola Law School in New Orleans when he met his wife, Deborah Jean Young, whom he married June 4, 1960. Soon afterward, the couple moved to Lafayette, CA, where David worked for Shell Petroleum. In 1964, when David said he got his calling to ministry, the family moved to Sewanee, Tennessee, where he studied at the University of the South, graduating with a Master of Divinity. During these years, David and Debbie celebrated the births of their sons David, Daniel, Michael, and Peter.

David served as priest for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilmington, NC; Grace Episcopal Church in New Orleans, LA; and St. Andrews Episcopal Church in North Highlands, CA. After serving as a priest for 20 years, David completed a law degree and worked as a Public Defender in Placerville, CA, until his retirement in 1997.

David and Deborah retired to St. Leonard, MD, and moved to Macon, GA, in 2008. His life was enriched by grandchildren Rebecca, Sarah, Michelle, Julia, and Adam. He enjoyed music, reading, good food, and being with family. This summer he and Deborah celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary at Walt Disney World, his favorite vacation spot, with his children and grandchildren.

David was an incredibly loving and wise man with a wonderful sense of humor. His caring and love for his children and grandchildren was only outshined by his love for his wife. He is survived by his wife Deborah Muth of Macon, GA.; his sons David Muth of Martinez, CA; Daniel Muth of Wilmington, NC; Michael Muth, of Macon, GA; Peter Muth, of Roseville, CA; his brother, Donald Muth of Metairie, LA; and five grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a truly wonderful man who will be missed dearly. A memorial service will be celebrated Saturday, September 22, at 10:00 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 753 College St., Macon, GA.
