Thad Benjamin Binford, 79, of Macon, Georgia, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Hart’s Mortuary at the Cupola, with the Reverend Matt Pippin officiating.
Son of the late Julian Benjamin Binford and Anna Evelyn Johnson Haston, Thad was born in Macon, Georgia on April 20, 1944.
Thad was a pioneer of motocross racing in Southeast Georgia. He was a multi-year District 9 AMA Champion, competing in flat track, Enduro, Hare Scramble, Hill Climb, and Motocross. He paved the way for all types of Motocross in Middle Georgia. He owned his own Bultaco dealership in the 70s and was revered as one of the best mechanics for two-stroke engines in the area. In 1976, he owned the first jet ski to be ridden on Lake Tobesofkee, and later pursued jet ski racing in the Southeast. He continued Motocross racing well into his 70s, winning the SEVMX overall championship in the 60+ class three times. He loved sharing his knowledge and passion for racing with his children, grandchildren, and the future generation of MX riders.
Thad is survived by his wife of 48 years, June Binford of Macon, Georgia; children, Michelle Grinnell of Kathleen, Georgia; Alecia Martin Huntsman (Mark) of Forsyth, Georgia; and Benjie Binford (Carmen) of Forsyth, Georgia; grandchildren, William Grinnell, III (Marissa) of Valdosta, Georgia; Jordan Grinnell of Tifton, Georgia; Brock and Carter Beth Toller, both of Macon, Georgia, Kaylee and Sadie Binford, both of Forsyth, Georgia; sisters, Beth Damron of Macon, Georgia; and Nancy Guthrie of Laguna Beach, California; brother, Jimmy Haston of Perry, Georgia; nephew, Lewis Brooks of Macon, Georgia; sister-in-law, Brenda Smith of Macon, Georgia; and beloved pet, Maggie Mae.
In addition to his parents, Thad was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Monroe and Sallie Johnson, and A.B. and Edith Binford; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
