Sue Williams Allen passed away May 18, 2024, having graced this earth for 100 years and eight months. She was born September 8, 1923, in Emanuel County, Georgia, the fourth of five children to Jesse Rozar “JR” Williams and Mollie Hicks Williams.
Sue graduated from Eastman High School and then headed to Brewton Parker College. She credits Brewton-Parker for bringing her out of her shell and was voted “Best All Around” in her sophomore year. She then attended a new third year teaching program at West Georgia. Upon completion, she took a job in Carrollton at a mill nursery school and attended Furman University during the summers where she earned her B.S. in Education in 1945. She taught in Bibb County elementary schools for 21 years, interrupted by a 13-year “maternity leave.” She spent the majority of her career teaching third grade at Clisby School. She ended her teaching career as a librarian (not media specialist!) at Duresville Elementary. Many former students still remember her as their favorite teacher and she inspired generations of readers.
In January of 1951, she was set up on a date by one of her third-grade students’ mother. The date went well and Sue and Aubrey married in June of that year at Mulberry Street Methodist Church. They attended Mulberry and then Centenary Methodist where they became very active members. They later helped establish Riverside United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher, Circle leader, Sunday School Class President and Coordinator of Older Adult Activities (originated the name R.S.V.P. – Riverside’s Super Valuable People).
Being born with a heart to teach and serve, it is no surprise she spent so much of her retirement years serving the Macon community. She was Past President of the Macon Exchangette Club, named Outstanding Exchangette in 1990. Sue also volunteered for several years as a Pink Lady at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Sue was an avid reader and often had a book at her side even in her last years. Her grandchildren remember fondly the trips to the library where they would return with arm loads of books to read during their visits. Many books became performances for Sue including her telling of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. She loved sharing a laugh and many of her friends and family begged for stories of her “Uncle Apt.”
Sue and Aubrey thoroughly enjoyed their life together. They maintained memberships in both Macon Little Theatre and Theatre Macon, and often traveled to see plays in other locations. During their retirement years they made time between all their church events, theater performances, and visits with family and friends to travel the world. Together they visited six of the seven continents and more countries than we can count!
Sue Allen was one of the very last of the “Greatest Generation,” who survived the Great Depression and WWII and laid the foundations of our country as we know it today.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 52 years, Aubrey Marion Allen; son, Jay Marion Allen and stepson, Ray Allen; brothers, I.J Williams and Vernon Williams; sisters, Minnie Mullis and Margie Cadwell; nephew, Verne Williams; and niece, Kathy Hilliard. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Stephen Aubrey Allen (Florence) of Macon; granddaughter, Christine Allen Palmer (Michael) of Gulfport, Mississippi; grandson, Stephen Aubrey Allen, Jr. (Erin) of Chicago; great-granddaughters, Emily and Sidney Palmer; step granddaughters, Kelly Allen and Lisa Allen, and step great-grandson, Grayson of Birmingham; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held Tuesday, May 28 from 2:00pm at Riverside United Methodist Church in Macon, and the family will greet friends at the church from 1:00pm. The family may also be contacted at the home of Steve and Florence Allen in Macon. Memorial contributions may be made to Riverside United Methodist Church, 735 Pierce Avenue, Macon Georgia 31204.
