Sophie Oxley Thompson

Macon- Sophie Oxley Clark Thompson died Saturday, February 12, 2011. Services will be held at 1:00PM, Monday, February 14, 2011 in the Chapel of Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road. The family will greet friends following service at Hart's at the Cupola. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Alzheimer's Association of Central Georgia, 277 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, Macon, Georgia 31201 or Carlyle Place Music Fund, 5300 Zebulon Road, Macon, Georgia 31210. Mrs. Thompson was born on the family farm in Monroe County to her parents, Mary Durden Oxley and George W. Oxley, both now deceased. She was preceded in death by her six brothers, George W. Oxley, Thamar Oxley, Paul Oxley, Harry Oxley, Elton Oxley and Ernest Oxley. Mrs. Thompson grew up in Macon and attended A. L. Miller High School. She also attended the University of Alabama, the University of Georgia, Wesleyan College and graduated from Georgia College in Milledgeville. She was a former member of Cherokee Heights Baptist Church and Vineville United Methodist Church and was a Phi Mu alumna. Mrs. Thompson taught the fourth grade at Joseph N. Neel School and Bellevue School and retired from Stratford Academy. Teaching was her passion. Mrs. Thompson married Augustus (Gus) Howard Clark and they had two daughters, Sophie Clark Williams (deceased) and Carol Clark Robeson (Ron). She later married Clyde Elrah Thompson (deceased). Mrs. Thompson's grandchildren are: Robin Robeson Gillis (Ben) of Dublin, Holly Robeson Arnold (Frank) of Macon, Ronald Clark Robeson of Macon, Lisa Williams Seneker (Sonny) of Macon, William Morris Williams of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kelly Williams Kennedy (Will) of Moorpark, California, Jennifer Williams Browne (Jeff) of Macon and Julie Williams Chandler (Don) of Macon. Her great-grandchildren are: Molly and Abby Gillis; Miller Arnold; Morgan and Sophie Seneker; Will, Gus and Kate Williams; Phillip and Lily Kennedy; Ben and Ellie Browne; and Don Chandler, III. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and caregivers, Diana Pearson and Laverne Prater. Register online at www.hartsmort.com.
