Shirley Haynie Macklin

November 10, 1938 — November 18, 2017

Shirley Haynie Macklin, age 79, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2017, after an extended illness. Born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, to Lynn and Rachael Haynie of Union, South Carolina, she grew up in Washington D.C. and Jacksonville, FL pursuing a teaching career. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Jacksonville University with a BA degree in English. She earned further advanced degrees including a Master of Arts in Teaching from Jacksonville University, and a Specialist in Education Sixth Year Degree from the College of Education at the University of Georgia. She taught in various school systems, including Duval County School System in Jacksonville, FL, the English Department at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, the English Department at Mercer University in Macon, GA, the English Department at Macon State College and the Bibb County School System. In Macon, Shirley served for 26 years, the last ten years as a principal at Southeast High School. Shirley received numerous awards during her career. She was presented with the McKibbon Lane Award for Excellence in Teaching, Star teacher, Teacher of the Year, Salmagundi Literary Awards, Phi Delta Kappa, and Phi Kappi Phi. As Henry B. Adams stated, "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." Shirley's greatest rewards came from touching the lives, minds, and hearts of her students, many of which contacted her later in life and thanked her for her influence. She was an educator that deeply appreciated her students and was able to connect with them through her love of English Literature. Shirley was community-oriented and served on the Board of the Booker T. Washington Community Center, Friends of the Library, Macon State Gourmet Group, Wesleyan Woods Garden Club, and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority Alumni. She was very active in her faith and was proud to have been a delegate to the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. She loved traveling, especially the many trips to England with her husband, Jim. Also, a great family tradition was the yearly trip to Saint Simons Island, GA. She shared many fond family memories there. She is survived by her husband, Jim, of 57 years, her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Kendall McGreggor of Newnan, GA, and son and daughter-in-law, Col. James R. Macklin, Jr. and Macie Macklin of Madison, Alabama. Grandchildren, George and Mary Katherine McGreggor, and Mollie, Annie and James Macklin, III. A private, family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346. An online registry at www.hartsmort.com is available to share thoughts with the family. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory, 765 Cherry Street, has charge of arrangements.
