It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sherry Whigam, on April 27, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Martha Bowman Church. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
Sherry Whigam, born June 21, 1946, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Sherry lived a life defined by service, kindness and deep community roots.
A proud graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, Sherry went on to build a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service, working her way up to the position as Manager of Marketing for the Southeastern District of Geogia, a position she held until her retirement in 2008.
Throughout her life she gave generously of her time and heart. In her earlier years she volunteered with Paula’s Closet and supported Meals on Wheels, offering both assistance and companionship to those in need. She later became a devoted member of Martha Bowman Church, where she was actively involved in the Frances Asbury Sunday School Class. Sherry was also a passionate member of the Barrington Garden Club, contributing her time and energy with enthusiasm. Her steady presence, generosity and willingness to serve touched countless lives.
Sherry was a people person and made friends with almost everyone she knew – a friendship that she retained for the entirety of her life.
Sherry is survived by her beloved husband, Martin Whigam; her son, Denny Cox (wife Colleen), and her grandchildren, John Cox and Reagan Cox. She is also survived by her siblings: Mike Hale (wife Jean) and Andy Hale (wife Judy) ; sister-in-law, Marion Hale; and several nieces and nephews, each with special memories of time spent together.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Andrew Hale, her mother, Bertha Oliver and brother, Joe Hale.
Sherry will be remembered for her warm spirit, her unwavering commitment to both her friends & community and the joy she brought to those around her.
Her presence will be deeply missed and her legacy of service and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
