Ruth Cheves passed away peacefully on July 1, 2009. Ruth Cheves was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Langdon (Minnie Ida Roberts) Cheves. She was born in Macon, Georgia, and was educated in the Bibb County School System. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Thomaston, Georgia. She is a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, WMU Training School in Louisville, Kentucky, and Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Miss Cheves taught primary and special education classes in the Bibb County School System. Later she was Supervisor of Special Education Teachers for the Montgomery County, Maryland School System. She participated as an Instructor in a National Institutes of Mental Health Teacher Training Project in the Special Education Division of Education at Syracuse University. Miss Cheves was later appointed Associate Professor at University of Houston in Houston, Texas, where she served for several years. After retiring from teaching, Miss Cheves returned to Mercer University to serve as Academic Secretary of the Christianity Department for 16 years. She was a long-time member of First Baptist and Highland Hills Baptist churches in Macon. She served as Church Librarian of First Baptist Church for ten years from 1995 until 2005. Miss Cheves was active in professional, educational and community organizations on the state and national levels. Miss Cheves is survived by many friends in the Macon area and far beyond. She is survived by two sisters, Emily (Mrs. Hugh) Garrett of Fort Walton Beach Florida and Mildred (Mrs. John) Moorman of Martinsville, Virginia. Miss Cheves was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Rose Croom and Mrs. Hazel Cheves Grunwald; three brothers - Dr. Harry Langdon Cheves, John William Cheves and Joseph Parry Cheves, Sr. She is survived by nieces and nephews - Carol Cheves Grimes of Gordon, Georgia, Doris Croom and Betty Jo Croom of Warsaw, Virginia, Joseph Parry (Jack) Cheves, Jr. of Eau Gallie, Florida, Olin Harry Cheves of Eatonton, Georgia, John William (Billy) Cheves and Dr. Harry Langdon Cheves, Jr., and by great and great-great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 10:00AM at First Baptist Church. Miss Cheves requested that no flowers be sent, but that any gifts in her memory be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church of Macon, or to the favorite charity of the donor. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory, Cherry Street has charge of arrangements.
