Roy Wood peacefully succumbed to IPF at his home Monday, January 16th, in the care of hospice at the age of 82. He was born February 18, 1934 in Macon, GA to Irma Bell and Roger Lee Wood. His three siblings include Margorie Louise Barlow (deceased) (Roy H Barlow, deceased), Ralph Eugene Wood (deceased) (Janie), and Shelby Wood Brooks (CL Brooks) of Ivey, Georgia. He attended Fort Hawkins elementary school and graduated from Lanier High in 1951. In 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Bettie Hollis Jordan, and joined the Army during the Korean conflict. He later used the GI bill to attend Georgia Tech and earned an Electrical Engineering degree. While at Georgia Tech, Roy and Bettie had two sons, Charles Stephen (Chuck) and Thomas Gregory (Greg) (deceased) (Dawn). After graduating Georgia Tech, Roy worked at Georgia Power in Macon, then Sperry Gyroscope on Long Island. In 1961, he returned to Macon, GA and worked as a civil servant at Robins AFB for 35 years. During that time, he attended the University of Rochester for a Masters of Science in Systems Analysis. After retiring from civil service, he worked for approximately 10 more years for ARINC before retiring to his farm to spend more time with his grandchildren. As a pass time, he worked briefly at Riverside Ford delivering parts. Roy is survived by his wife of 63 years: Bettie, son Charles (Ellen), sister Shelby, and four grandchildren: Tyler Kirk Wood (Megan), Katherine Hollis Wood, Courtney Anne Wood, Conner Charles Wood, and one great granddaughter Emory. Roy was a man of faith and was always very active in his church. Over the years, he attended Mulberry St Methodist Church, High Point Church, and most recently, Stone Edge Church. In his younger years, Roy was active in running 5-10 K's, skydiving, and piloting skydivers. In his latter years, he was an active and involved, doting grandfather. He loved his children and grandchildren and devoted his life to them. Throughout his life, he always had a ready sense of humor - even in the very last days. His life will be remembered for his humor, his devotion to his family, and his love of the Lord, who was always #1 in his life. Roy donated his body to Mercer School of Medicine, so final rights will be private, at a later time. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Stone Edge Church, 5659 Zebulon Rd, Macon, GA. Pastor Joey Ellis will officiate. Family will have a time of visitation from 10:30 AM until service time. Please make donations to Stone Edge Church, or your favorite charity, instead of flowers.
