Dr. Rodney Mack Browne, 73, of Macon died Friday, June 3, 2011. Memorial services will be held at 11:00AM Monday, June 6, 2011 at Highland Hills Baptist Church with Dr. James C. Dant and Rev. Cass DuCharme officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hart's at the Cupola on Sunday from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.
Born in Thomaston, Rodney was predeceased by his mother, Earline Spier Browne, and his father, McCurdy Benjamin Browne, Jr. At an early age he moved to Manchester with his family and was valedictorian of his high school class. Dr. Browne received a BS degree from Mercer University where he was president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and member of Blue Key National Honor Society. Dr. Browne graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Medical Fraternity. He did an internship at the Macon Hospital, now the Medical Center of Central Georgia. After serving two years as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, he completed an OB-GYN residency in Augusta and Macon where he was named Resident of the Year in 1969.
For thirty-three years Dr. Browne practiced in Macon with OB-GYN Specialists and was active in community life. He served as president of the Bibb County Medical Society in 1984 and was named Physician of the Year in 2003. He was a member of the Medical Association of Georgia, the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the South Atlantic Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology in which he served on various committees. He was on staff at the Medical Center of Central Georgia and on staff at the Coliseum Medical Centers where he served as Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
As an active member of Highland Hills Baptist Church, Dr. Browne taught Sunday School for 35 years, served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons three times, and sang in the choir. In the community he served on the Porter Community Trust and was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Macon Rotary Club. He was chairman of the Board of Governors at Stratford Academy, president of Stratford's Interested Parents, and president of the Stratford Booster Club.
A true gentleman, Dr. Browne is remembered for his kind disposition, his warm sense of humor, his devotion to family, his concern for his patients, and his faithfulness to God.
Dr. Browne is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Bellamy Browne; a daughter, Lisa Barksdale (David) of Greenville, SC; a daughter, Leanne Rosenbower (Todd) of Greensboro, N C; and a son, Jeffrey Browne (Jennifer) of Macon. He is survived by six grandchildren: Alex, Eric, and Kristen Rosenbower; Thomas Barksdale; and Ben and Ellie Browne.
He is also survived by his sister, Judy Powell (Charlie) of Warm Springs; three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
