Robert Harris Walker, Jr. (Harris) of Macon, GA and Wilmington, NC passed away on March 17th. He was 71 years old. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Jane Vaughan Walker and brother, Julian S. Walker. He is survived by daughters Sarah Elizabeth Walker (Amanda Tiffany) of Kingston, NY and Laura Walker Ormes of Brooklyn, NY. He also leaves behind sister-in-law Nell Carter Walker of Wilmington, niece Julia Walker Jewell of Wilmington and nephew Douglass Carter Walker of Miami, FL. A graduate of Guilford College in Greensboro, NC with a degree in economics, he was an Account Representative at Westinghouse/Philips Lighting for 30 years. Harris raised two daughters with his beloved wife Jane. A doting father, there was never a Krispy Kreme doughnut fundraiser too early on a Saturday morning, nor a piano or dance recital to be missed. He was an inveterate tinkerer who could often be found working in his yard or building something in his workshop. If he wasn't there, you'd probably find him at the helm of his cherished sailboat, gliding with his family and friends on the lakes of Georgia or the North Carolina coast. Known to all as a gregarious storyteller with a friend (or many) in every port, his greatest love was always the piano. The ability to entertain and bring people joy with those 88 keys represented, to him, the purest form of happiness. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, March 25th at Wrightsville United Methodist Church in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Visitation to follow. A memorial gathering in Macon will be held at a later date. Donations in the name of Harris Walker may be made to DREAMS of Wilmington, a non-profit dedicated to providing youth-in-need with free-of-charge programming in the literary, visual, multi-media and performing arts.
