“I didn’t just build things; I built a family”

Robert Leo Quintus-Bosz, “QB” aged 81, died on October 20, 2021, of natural causes at his home in Macon, Georgia.  He was born on August 6, 1940, in Blitar, on the island of Java in Indonesia, the son of Aksel and Marianne Quintus-Bosz. “Bob”, as his friends called him, was married to Cecilia Vera Ocampo in Mexico City, on August 6, 1966.  Their two children were also born in Mexico City, where the family lived until they moved to the United States in 1978.

Bob lived an abundant life, rich with a broad set of experiences. Born into a world at war, he moved to Holland with his parents after the war ended. He spent his childhood in Holland and then Suriname.  He went on to obtain his BSc in geology at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, in Mexico City in 1967.  He worked at the Consejo de Recursos Minerales as an exploration geologist, where, among other work, he led the discovery of the Santo Domingo phosphate deposits in Baja California Sur.  He moved to the United States in 1978 to obtain an MSc. in geology at the Colorado School of Mines. Upon graduation, he went to work with J.M. Huber, in Macon, Georgia to explore for kaolinite deposits.  He worked for 25 years, rising to the position of chief geologist before retiring in 2007.

Bob was known as a well-traveled and knowledgeable person, who was exceptionally generous with his talents and time. He was principled, rigorous, and obsessed with “doing things right”. He could exude an aloof seriousness, yet to those that knew him well, he was a loving soul that enjoyed joking and cultivated deep friendships. Above all he treasured his family and friends. He was a devoted husband and father, and together with Cecilia, provided an abundance of love for which we will all be indebted. To his grandchildren, “Abuelo” was the source of great stories and witty nicknames. We will all remember him with a smile, a warmth in the heart, and a sense that we should leave things better than we found them.

Bob is survived by his wife, Cecilia, his two sons, Aksel and Harald; and five grandchildren, Bram, Isabel, Susana, Evita and Olivia.  He had three siblings, and is survived by his two brothers, Mark and Jost.  He is predeceased by his sister, Katherine.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Macon, Wednesday October 27th at 11:00 am.  We ask that in lieu of flowers, donation be made in his name to St. Peter Claver Catholic Church.
