Robert Thomas Manning, 83, of Jones County, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Hart’s Mortuary Jones County Chapel.
Son of the late Thomas Watson Manning and Minnie Mae McGraw Manning, Robert was born in Dudley, Georgia on October 29, 1942. Robert enlisted in the United States Army and was deployed to Vietnam. During his service, Robert was awarded the Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After bravely serving his country and re-enlisting to go back and help his buddies, Robert continued a legacy of hard work at Norfolk Southern, where his dedication and expertise were recognized for many years. His work ethic extended well beyond professional life, embodying the true spirit of a loving father, devoted husband, cherished grandfather, and adored great-grandfather.
Robert was a man of many talents and generously shared his knowledge with others. Whether it was teaching the practical skills he had mastered, from building cabinets or cooking a delicious meal to tinkering as a boat mechanic while working for Emory Davis at Davis Marine on Gray Highway.
As good with his hands as he was with his heart, Robert was also the family’s unofficial first aid expert, always ready to help anyone who needed it. He was an avid gardener, and his garden was a testament to the love and attention he invested in all living things.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Linda Manning; daughter, Doris E. Williams; son, David Manning; granddaughter, Melyssa Jones; four great grandchildren: Evelyn, Brooklynn, Abel, and Aden; and numerous siblings, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
