Fort Valley- Robert Eugene Lanyon, attorney, counselor, husband, father, grandfather and friend died Tuesday, January 6, 2009. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 8, 2009 from 4:30PM until 6:30PM at Fort Valley Presbyterian Church (behind the Courthouse), Fort Valley, GA. The Reverend Ted Worley will officiate at graveside services on Friday, January 9, 2009, at 11:00AM at Oaklawn Cemetery, Fort Valley, GA. Bob was born in Fort Collins, Colorado to Albert and Ruth Lanyon on August 9,1925. While growing up, he lived in Colorado, Wyoming, Mississippi and Louisiana. He attended Georgia School of Technology in Atlanta, GA and graduated from Mercer University in Macon, GA. He served in two branches of the armed forces, first in the Navy in World War II and then in the Air Force in the Korean War. He was a reservist at Robins Air Force Base until he retired as Lt. Colonel in 1977. He was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America. Bob married Annie Marie Howell in March of 1951. After serving in the Air Force for one year in Dallas, Texas, they moved to Fort Valley in 1952 where Bob began practicing law. Bob was known to be very compassionate about his work. It was not uncommon to ride through town at midnight and still see the light burning in his upstairs office. He was a 50 year member of the American Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Association and the Macon Circuit Bar Association where he served as President. He was Special Assistant Attorney General for the state of Georgia. He was Fort Valley City Attorney for a number of years. Bob was a community leader serving as past chairman of the Heart Association, as well as working with the Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Boy Scouts of America and various other organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of the Pine Needles Country Club where he was President for many years. He was a member of the Fort Valley Presbyterian Church where he served as Trustee, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, President of the Men's Club and Superintendent of Sunday School. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Annie Marie Lanyon; his children, Robert E. Lanyon, Jr. (Brenda) of Lynchburg, Virginia and Mary Elizabeth Clark (David) of Fayetteville, Ga.; his grandchildren, Adam Robert Clark and Mary Kathleen Clark of Fayetteville, Ga. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Oaks at Peake and Home Instead Senior Care sitters for their love and care. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory, Cherry Street in Macon has charge of arrangements.
