Robert Awtry Jenkins

April 5, 1921 — January 20, 2015

Robert Awtry Jenkins, 93, passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, January 25, 2015 in the chapel of Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, with Norman Knott officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery with military honors. Family will greet friends one hour prior at the Cupola. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pine Pointe Hospice, 6261 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia 31210, or The ALS Association, 1275 K Street N.W., Suite 250, Washington, D.C. 20005. Mr. Jenkins was born April 5, 1921 in Macon, Georgia to the late William J. (Jule) Jenkins and the late Leila Powell Jenkins. He attended John W. Burke Elementary School and graduated from Lanier High School in 1940. He played football, baseball, and was in the ROTC. Mr. Jenkins served in the United States Army during World War II (November 1942-November 1945). He was stationed with the First Armored Division in North Africa and Italy. He received many medals as well as the Silver Star for fighting five battles. He also served in the Combat Core of Engineers with First Armored Division. Mr. Jenkins retired from Dunlop Tire & Rubber Corporation. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, and was also a well-known horseman in the Southeast having won the Southern Roadhorse Championship in Montgomery, Alabama in 1959 with his prized roadhorse, Royal Ace. In 1942, he won the semi-pro Baseball Championship Tournament at Luther Williams in Macon, Georgia. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Jenkins; daughter, Susan Plagge (Richard); son, Steve Jenkins (Sonya); daughter, Lynn Bossert (John); 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
