Robert “Bobby” G. Hooks, Jr., age 77, of Macon, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Piedmont Macon Hospital.
Bobby was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on October 29, 1947, to Robert and Elizabeth Hooks. Bobby was a jovial man and had a great sense of humor. He always wanted to make people laugh. He believed that laughter was the best “medicine”.
Bobby followed in his father’s footsteps and became a football player, coach, and then a referee. He went to Georgia Tech and played for a year. Growing up, he was involved in leadership at Athens Y Camp located in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. He always wanted to one day move to this area, near the North Georgia Mountains. When his football coaching career was over, he took over as a salesman for McKeeson. He also drove a bus and truck.
Bobby was the son of Robert G. Hooks, Sr., and Elizabeth Tucker Hooks. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Harriet Hooks, and his grandson, Harrison Hooks.
He is survived by three children, Helen (James) Shoptaw of Hazard, Kentucky, Bill (Deren) Hooks of Thomasville, Georgia, and Martha Ann (Rob) Lord of Newnan, Georgia; and one sister, Beth (George) Whitton of Athens, Georgia. He also has twelve grandchildren: James, Robert, Samuel and William Shoptaw, Rachel Lord, Keegan Chilvers, Brayton Hooks, Thomas Chilvers, Adeline Hooks, RJ Lord, Barrett Chilvers, and Sonny Lord; and also, a niece and a nephew.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Riverside Cemetery in Macon, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the Athens Y Camp, Tallulah Falls, Georgia.
