Doctor Richard Calvin Mims, Jr. MD, 64 of Macon, Georgia, passed away Monday, July 8, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 5:00PM on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at First Evangelical Church in Macon, Georgia with Pastor Tim Long. The family will hold a visitation preceding the ceremony at 4:15PM.

Dr. Richard Mims was born August 12, 1959, in Anderson, South Carolina to the late Katherine Alexander Mims and Richard Calvin Mims Sr. He graduated with honors a year early, at 16, from Airport High School in West Columbia, SC. He received an academic scholarship to the University of South Carolina where he majored in Marine Biology. Following his graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1980, he was accepted to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Throughout his years at USC, Richard was an active member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He graduated with his medical degree in 1984. He was then accepted to Duke University in North Carolina for his residency program where he started in Pediatrics before returning to USC for Anesthesiology. He finished his Anesthesiology residency in 1987. Richard was in the U.S. Navy starting in 1984 throughout his residencies. After he graduated, he moved to Charleston to finish out his service before being honorably discharged in 1990.

His most notable and all-time favorite workplace was at OrthoGeorgia, which he started at in 2004 before he could no longer work in October of 2023. Richard was well known and so incredibly loved by his work family. He was a simple man who loved dad jokes, deep sea fishing, gaming, and spending quality time with his family. He was an avid lover of the South Carolina Gamecocks and always enjoyed watching the games with his family.

Richard is survived by his wife Ellen Wright Mims; three sons, Timothy Scott Mims, Richard Calvin Mims III(Melessa), and Alexander Wright Mims; two daughters, Hannah Grace Mims and Emmalee Louise Mims; bonus children Mckenzie Lea Borders and Christopher Michael Smith; seven grandchildren, Abigail Ellen Mims, Zoie Marie Weaver, Zackary Bryson Laster, Richard Calvin Mims IV, Marleigh Elizabeth Mims, Seylore Alexander Mims and Stella Lillian Mims; two brothers Franklin Alexander Mims and David Neill Mims; one sister, Mary Katherine Mims Hall; and many nieces and nephews.
