Richard McEwen, 89 and a resident of Carlyle Place, passed away on October 23rd. He graduated from the University of Toledo and immediately joined the US Navy serving as captain of a PT boat. After duty in the southwest Pacific he served as an instructor of Celestial Navigation at the USNR Midshipman School at the University of Notre Dame. Mr. McEwen spent his entire career in retailing and retired in 1984 as CEO of Burdines of Florida. Following retirement, he served as director on several corporate boards and as a member of the Florida Medical Review Board. During his career and even after retirement he worked tirelessly towards improvement of human relations within his community and was acknowledge for these efforts by the cities of Miami and Miami Beach, the state of Florida and the National Council of Christians and Jews. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Martha, a son, Michael, a daughter, Joellen, four grandsons and two great-grandsons. There will be a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 29 at Northminster Presbyterian Church followed by a Celebration of Life at Carlyle Place. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that you make donations to the American Heart Association as an acknowledgement of his life.
