Reverend Burien Winford Smith

Reverend Burien Winford Smith, also known to friends and family as “B.W.” and “Bo,” age 87, passed away on May 17, 2018 in Macon, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Hart’s at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, GA 31210 . The Reverend Alan Smith will be officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. There will be a reception immediately following the chapel service. The family will hold a private burial at Beulah Baptist Church in Glenwood.

Burien was born in Bowdon, Georgia on June 29, 1930. He graduated from Bowdon High School and served in the United States Air Force in Japan during the Korean War, where he was selected as a member of the elite Security Service. After his time in the military, he attended Georgia State University and the seminary. He spent his career in the automotive industry and retired from Quaker State Motor Oil in 1995. During his many years with them, he held various positions in sales and management in cities across the United States including Macon, Atlanta, Birmingham, New Orleans, Portland and Los Angeles. He enjoyed his extensive travels, especially to the West Coast and Hawaii, and the people he met on his journeys.

Burien was passionate about his golf game and played hundreds of courses in his life, ranging from state parks in his home state of Georgia, to infamous ones such as Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines. At heart, Burien was a farmer and he enjoyed raising beef cattle as a hobby and was a master gardener. First and foremost, he was an ordained Southern Baptist minister and a dedicated follower of Christ. He served as interim pastor at New Harmony Baptist Church in Cedartown, Georgia and pastor of Beulah Baptist Church in Glenwood, Georgia. Burien also taught Sunday school and Bible classes at the many churches he belonged to over the years.

He is survived by his wife, Ferral Dean Smith; five children, Trennis Smith, Katrina Smith, and Felecia Smith Holland, all of Culloden, Charlene Flanders (Carey) of Warner Robins, Allyson Kaiser (Mitch) of Eden Prairie, MN; nine grandchildren, Melissa Deal Hernandez (Mano), David Deal (Felicia), Lance Mealer, Amanda Holland-Jones (Jason), Veronica Prowant (Shawn), Tiffany Flanders, Maxwell Kaiser, Jakob Kaiser and Andrew Kaiser; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Reverend Alan Smith (Donna) of Bowdon; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Burien is preceded in death by his parents, Olin Ayers and Lillian McGuire Smith; sisters JoAnne Smith Stewart and Francis Smith Prince; ex-wife and mother of four children, Myrna Knowles; and wife and mother of one child, Jacqulyn Currie Smith.

Family was Burien’s passion and his larger than life smile, never ending stories, numerous words of wisdom and love of ice cream will live on in those who were fortunate enough to call him “Daddy” and “Grandaddy.”
