Rebecca Moore Sherrill

Macon- Rebecca Moore Sherrill passed away peacefully on January 2, 2010 at the age of 78. She was born in 1931 to Rudolph and Ethel Moore, formerly of Valdosta, Georgia. She was predeceased by her husband, James W. Sherrill, a founder of the Macon surveying and civil engineering firm, Tamplin and Sherrill, Inc. She was raised in South Georgia, living in Albany, Quitman, Thomasville and Valdosta and was Miss Quitman of 1947. A 1952 graduate of Simpson College (B.S.), she was active throughout her working life as a teacher and librarian. She taught English at Mark Smith High School and was school librarian at Florence Bernd and L.H. Williams elementary schools before joining the Middle Georgia Regional Library. She held a number of positions at Middle Georgia including managing the Shurlington branch library and being Director of the Talking Book Center for the blind and physically handicapped. She was Chair of the Georgia Library Association from 1985-1987. She had a lifelong commitment to her personal education, attaining a total of four Master's degrees and one Six Year degree from a variety of institutions, including the University of Georgia (M.S. and M.L.S.), Georgia College and State University (M.B.A.), and the University of South Carolina (M.L.S.). Upon retirement, she continued an active life of community service, volunteering as a Docent at the Hay House and working to establish and support a library for the inmates of the Bibb County Jail. She was an avid reader and travel enthusiast and had a passion for interior decorating. Mrs. Sherrill is survived by three sons, Billy (Shirley Libby) and Scott (Candy) of Atlanta and Pete (Margaret) of Jacksonville, Florida. She is also survived by three grandsons, Gentry Sherrill of Atlanta and Austin and Ryan Sherrill of Jacksonville. Mrs. Sherrill will lie in state at Hart's Mortuary, 756 Cherry Street on Tuesday afternoon and visitors will be received at the family home, located at 2045 Woodland Drive, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, Tuesday, January 5. The funeral service will be at Vineville United Methodist Church 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 6, with Dr. Marcus Tripp officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery.
